Lifesaving sports
From the humanitarian idea to attract and train people for the water rescue service, the rescue sport developed. Two types are basically differentiated: the pool or indoordisziplinen (pool-lifesaving) and the ocean events (surf-lifesaving).
Thanks to the TV series "Baywatch", the sport has slowly and confidently become known to the general public and has helped to improve the image of volunteer lifeguards, and since then, there has been an increasing demand for training in these competitive disciplines within Europe.
Rescue sport means besides all fun also a test field for the emergency. Because the individual disciplines are derived directly from the daily requirements of the lifeguards.
Trend sport lifesaving
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Australian lifeguard associations began to turn the guards into the sport of bather safety. This sport has developed into a national sport of the Australians to this day. At the Australian Championships live broadcasts of the TV stations are the order of the day. All sports equipment used in rescue sports also comes from the production of rescue equipment used in everyday use, such as the rescue board (rescue board). It is used in the water rescue service on the coast to take up injured people in the sea. When the victim is reached, it is returned to shore with the Rescue Board. Exactly these are the core elements of the eponymous rescue sport discipline in the competitions.
The biggest challenge for the rescue athletes in a surflifesaving event is the supreme discipline "Oceanman" (Surf Ironman). This is a triathlon consisting of surf swimming, rescue kayaking and rescue board races. But not all competitions take place in the water: With the "2-km Beach Run", with "Beach Flags", the relay "4 x 90 m Beach Relay" and the "Beach Sprint" speed, stamina and skill on the beach are in demand.
Humanity & Sports
Rescue is finding more and more followers worldwide. This is partly because the athletes have to provide very high swimmer performance in order to be successful and on the other hand because of the variety of different disciplines. Rescue Sports is also increasingly found in major sporting events such as World Games, Arafura Games, Goodwill Games and the Military World Games. But rescue sports are not just fun. Through competitive sports, young people are introduced to the humanitarian goals of the rescue swimming organizations worldwide and enthusiastic about life-saving and, moreover, often for guard duty. In an emergency, this sport helps to save lives.
